We are ONE BIG FAMILY of charity in Johor Bahru

Yayasan Suria JB (YSJB) – We are ONE BIG FAMILY of charity in Johor Bahru!

Over the past 11 years or so (the Foundation was established on 14th Sept 2012), YSJB’s family has grown so big that we have lost count of our clients, the Poor & Needy, we helped. Understandably so, as when volunteers walk around the town and when we are approached by ‘strangers’ we don’t even remember. They will definitely remember us for we have helped them before!

Our family has grown so BIG, we have so many clients (the Poor & Needy we help), countless, hopefully we help them and we let them go, able to stand on their own feet and we move on to the next family, a never-ending task, even if you don’t sleep and have 25 hours a day!

We take care of the living. A typical day like on Fri, 10/2/2023, we also took care of the dead.

While running around on Fri, we received a call from the daughter of one of our clients the night before, telling us that Dana (her mum), has died of complications due to dialysis, our client for 5 years, on our monthly cash assistance and monthly food bank.

As we were busy that day – receiving a RM2,000 cheque from Impiana Hotel, Senai, taking bread from Vburg Molek/Mt Austin/Village Grocer Paradigm Mall, visited a sick lady in Kulai, we swinged by at the Hindu crematorium at Kebun Teh to pay our last respects to Dana.

The night before, we received a call from her eldest daughter telling us mama had passed away and the body was at HSIJB – what to do?

We immediately activated the Undertaker, usually the whole funeral package would cost about RM5, 000 – we ‘negotiated’ and brought down the amount to RM1,100 using the Foundation’s name, we always have ‘our way’ with undertakers, we don’t have taboos (pantang) to say that the price of funeral packages cannot be negotiated as whatever price quoted by Undertaker is final. To us, this is NONSENSE. Undertaker uses this ‘taboo’ as an excuse to make money.

We have done this ‘bargaining’ many times before and nothing has happened – indeed the Foundation is doing very well today!

With the Foundation footing the funeral expenses and our presence at the crematorium, this meant a lot for the family (the 3 children left behind) for they were at a loss, with no money for funeral expenses and not knowing what to do.

We shall continue our monthly cash assistance and food bank for this family and we shall journey with them until they are okay.

This is only one of our many clients whom we take care of – while they are living and also while they are dead!

In short – we take care of the living and the dead!

Dana appeared in RTM1’s documentary as part of YSJB’s activities during MCO 1.0 – she will always be remembered as part of our ONE BIG FAMILY!

RIP Dana and till we meet again someday, bye bye for now!

As usual, I leave you with my favorite:
“I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”
